This drama, produced by Ochre Pictures, was Channel i's first attempt at local drama. It's a story about Geri Lee, an idealistic and principled, investigative journalist determined to expose the dark underbelly of the corporate world. She comes up against Djin Wong, the heir apparent and scion of the Wong Engineering and Construction (WEC). In Geri's opinion, WEC isn't as clean as it appears and in her efforts to chip away at its facade, she keeps having run-ins with Djin. Though she intensely dislikes his brash and arrogant ways, she finds herself strangely drawn to his strength, his faithfulness and the glimpses of his kindheartedness which he tries to keep hidden to avoid looking soft. And though Djin resents that Geri is digging around for skeletons in the WEC closet, he is charmed by her passion, idealism and sense of justice. So the series chronicles their relationship and that of their families: the struggles of Geri's lower middle class parents and her paraplegic sister and the corporate battles and in-fighting within Djin's high-powered family.

Perceptions stars Eelyn Kok, Timothy Nga, Steph Song, David Leong, Jacintha Charles, Samantha Foo, Sylvester Loo, Kee Thuan Chye and Brendon Fernandez.
This series was a departure to what I normally write. It's continuous, like a soap, where the stories continue week after week. And I jumped into the series in mid-stream, as a script editor for the pilot, the second episode and the final episode. It was interesting re-working a script from the ground up. I was free to re-create so long as I kept to all the main story points that my episodes had to cover. It sounded stifling at first but my creativity really kicks in when certain restraints are placed on me. What I loved was developing the relationships: foreshadowing what was to come and laying down the groundwork for the relationships. But the best part was writing about personal conflict, how people who love each other can hurt each other the most.

In the pilot, Geri breaks up with her fiancé. The challenge for me was to show how two people who are genuinely head over heels in love can still break up even though they still love each other. It was fun to delve deep into the characters hearts to find out how that could possibly happen. I hope I made them and their situation believable.
